PCB4403 Lecture 4 & 5 Notes (September 2, 2015)

Prokaryote (prenucleus)

  • 0.2→2 µm
  • no nuclear membrane
  • flagella: 2 protein building blocks
  • cell wall: present
    • gram + → thicker cell wall
    • gram – → thinner cell wall
      • antibiotics target this (penicillin)
  • small ribosomes (70S)
    • targeted by antibiotics tetracycline
  • circular ribosomes w/o histones
  • binary fission
  • transfer DNA fragments only (no meiosis)

Eukaryote (true nucleus)

  • 10-100 µm
  • true nucleus & membrane enclosed organelles
  • more complex (w/ microtubules)
  • usually no cell wall, but chemically simple when present
  • large ribosomes (80S)
    • (70S) ribosomes in mitochondria
  • linear chromosomes w/ histones
  • mitosis
  • meiosis (sexual reproduction)

to be continued…
